9 Things Your Cerologist Wants You to Know

No matter if you’re a waxing pro or new to the world of wax, there are a few things your Cerologist wants you to know to ensure each appointment is an experience you look forward to. We asked and they answered: here are the top 9 things your Cerologist hopes you know:

1. It’s a Judgement-Free Zone

Worried about what your Cerologist will think about your appearance? Don’t. This might be the most common worry many people have going into any waxing salon. What if I’m too hairy? What if I look different from other people? Stop yourself right there! Our Cerologists have performed services on thousands of women and men, so they’ve seen it all. For them, your appointment is another opportunity to help you look and feel confident, so if you’re worried that you’re too hairy or look too different, know that there is no such thing at Waxing the City.

2. Preparation Is Key

If you want your results to be smooth and long-lasting, what you do before your appointment is important. There are several things you should avoid before your wax. This includes sunbathing, working out, drinking alcohol and trimming. The harsh UVA/UVB rays can cause potential inflammation while working out can cause the wax to not adhere to your skin. Trimming before waxing is a big no-no, no matter how tempting, and remember, your hair should be at least a quarter inch in length (think the length of a grain of rice) when you’re getting a wax.

3. Ask The Questions!

Whether you’re a first timer or a Club Orange member, you will always have questions about the procedure, products, aftercare or your Cerologist’s recommendations. Don’t hesitate to ask any questions or express any concerns you might have like “what should I expect in my first Brazilian wax?“. After all, this appointment is for you. Your Cerologist wants you to feel comfortable; if you want your end result to look a certain way, don’t be afraid to speak up. Once you have all your burning questions answered, you’ll be able to relax throughout your appointment and enjoy being smooth as ever!

4. Leave It to The Pros

Resist the temptation to DIY your wax. Unless you’re an at-home waxing expert (and no, watching YouTube videos on how to wax does not count), leave hair removal to a trained professional (see: Cerologist). At-home waxing leaves a lot of room for error and chances are things could go very wrong, very fast. DIY waxing casualties include, but are not limited to: burns, bruised skin, rogue hairs left behind and more. Doesn’t sound like the smooth, flawless look you were going for. Trust us when we say: it’s not worth it!

5. Put Down That Razor

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, shaving before your wax is a big no. If you’re really looking to be hair free, you should be growing your hair out for at least three to four weeks before coming in for your wax. That means no shaving in between! Obviously, everyone’s hair grows at a different pace, but you should be looking for hair that’s at least a quarter inch in length. Our custom wax wraps around the entire hair and in order for the wax to lift the hair successfully, it needs something to hold onto! Not only that, but you won’t get as smooth of a finish and this causes your hair to grow back even faster.

6. Exfoliate & Moisturize

Refer back to number 3 where we said your results are dependent on preparation. Part of that preparation includes exfoliating and moisturizing prior to your appointment. This ensures that your skin and your hair are as soft as possible, which makes the waxing process much easier and more thorough. Start gently exfoliating about a week or so before your appointment. This helps all those hairs break through and makes it much easier for your Cerologist to pull them from the root. It can be tempting to go straight to the beach in that bikini after your fresh wax, but schedule your beach days around your wax appointment. Plus, swimming in water can expose your delicate skin to bacteria, so you may want to stay landside. It’s also important to avoid excessive sweating. This means staying away from hot yoga, saunas or intense workouts. Your Cerologist wants you to love your wax, and your results are dependent on following after-care instructions.

8. You Have Options

Your wax appointment is for you and about you! Your Cerologist wants you to know that no matter what service they’re providing, you have options to personalize your experience and look. Remember when we said to dialogue with your Cerologist? We weren’t joking. Our Cerologists are a lot of things, but one they’re not: mind readers! Only you know what type of bikini shape you want or how much hair you want removed, so communicate that with your Cerologist. 9. Timing Is Everything

There are a couple things you should consider when scheduling your appointment. Waxing too soon after your previous wax is something you want to avoid in order to make sure you have adequate regrowth of us to remove. Again, it depends on your hair-growth speed, but try to aim for an appointment at least 3-6 weeks after your last appointment. And this goes without saying, but time your wax appointments around your social events. Whether it’s a wedding or a pool party, you don’t want your wax to be the day before for the reasons listed above. Ask your Cerologist for their recommendation on when to pre-book your next wax. Every brow waxing service starts with a one-on-one brow mapping consultation with your Cerologist. “We know how nerve-racking a brow wax can be, so we guide you through the process as much as possible,” says Arlotta.

During your consultation, your wax technician will give you a mirror and show you the three important points of your brow:

The lowest point (the beginning of the brow)
The highest point (the arch)
The end of the brow (the tail)

These three points serve as a guide for your Cerologist to determine your final brow shape, so you can rest assured you’re in good hands when you step into the studio!

This is one of the most common questions we get from clients. Arlotta has the answer: “Draw an imaginary line straight upward from the sides of your nostrils. This is where both of the brows should begin.”

So, is there an ideal brow shape based on your face shape? The short answer: There are no hard-and-fast rules for which eyebrow shape is most attractive or flattering — the best brow shape for you is the one that you can wear confidently! However, there are some general guidelines you can follow for inspo.

Products like gel or pomade are essential to brow upkeep in between waxing appointments as they keep hairs in place even as regrowth happens. 3 more ways to achieve your best brow shape

1. Use makeup to enhance your natural look

Meet your new brow best friends: brow pencils and brow powder. Arlotta says, “Both products can give a soft or bold look depending on how you layer them. Remember to always blend the product as you go!”

Use the pencil to create fine, natural lines that mimic hair strokes to fill in areas where hair might be missing. Then, go in with powder to add depth and a pop of color to your eyebrows.

2. Turn up the glam with brow tinting

Brow tinting* gives even the finest, fairest brow hairs a boost of color for a bold, full look that enhances your natural features. It’s a low-maintenance way to preserve or build up your brow shape for two to three weeks — you’ll be able to say, “I woke up like this!” and mean it.

Avoid oil-based skincare products, treatments, and conditioners, which can wear down your lift.

And by that we mean: Don’t wax or pluck any part of your eyebrows while they are growing back in. Removing hairs at different phases of the growth cycle can lead to uneven brows and poor waxing results because it’s harder for the wax to grab onto short hairs that haven’t grown in fully.

Pro tip: Take a close-up photo of your brows at the start of your regrowth journey. Compare it to a new photo after two weeks to see how much progress you’ve made. This small step can help you stay patient and avoid the urge to overcorrect mid-growth.

2. Embrace oils and serums

Certain hair and skin products can help your eyebrows grow back faster — and may even prevent hair loss. Look for gentle oils, serums, and ingredients like:

Castor oil
Coconut oil
Jojoba oil
Peptides
Biotin
Panthenol

You already know protein plays a key role in muscle recovery. But did you know that eating a protein-rich diet could support eyebrow regrowth? It’s true — protein provides the building blocks your body needs to regrow hair. Try to incorporate these lean protein sources into your diet:

Chicken
Fish
Beans and legumes
Tofu
Nuts
Seeds

Other healthy foods that support hair nutrition and growth include whole grains, leafy greens, fruits and vegetables high in vitamin C, and foods high in omega-3 fatty acids (for example: almonds, walnuts, chia seeds, salmon, and canola oil).

4. Massage your eyebrows

Eyebrow massage is an often-suggested method for stimulating eyebrow regrowth. While there isn’t much evidence that massage leads to hair growth — especially in the eyebrows — one 2016 study did indicate that regular scalp massages helped hair grow thicker. Either way, take this as your sign to have a self-care moment! It could help your brows grow back fuller.

5. Exfoliate your skin

As if you needed another reason to exfoliate regularly, some evidence suggests that exfoliation can stimulate circulation and blood flow, promoting more hair growth. Regular exfoliation also sloughs away dead skin to make way for new growth — and fresh, clean skin makes products like oils and serums more effective.

6. Stress can slow regrowth, so make time to unwind

You don’t need an excuse to pause and take time for yourself, but if you want one — here it is! Hair loss is a common side effect of stress, and high levels of stress can also slow hair growth. Even if you have a busy schedule, setting aside time to relax can support your hair regrowth (and overall health). Here are some of our favorite self-care activities:

Just like trying anything new, getting the information you need can help put your mind at ease and build up your confidence to jump in with both feet — or in this case, both legs! So, to help you learn how to prepare for leg waxing, let’s start with a few important things to know:

1. Always work with waxing professionals who know exactly what they’re doing

2. Wax type and quality matters… choose wisely

Our consciously-created wax formulas are safe for your body and designed for an easy, effective removal process. Our studios have both hard wax and soft wax. While hard wax is best for areas with coarse hair, our leg waxing services use soft wax, which is made with beeswax and hibiscus fragrance and is best for areas where hair is finer. It’s a gentle formula safe for skin that allows for a quick and smooth process.

3. You have options about how you’ll get your legs waxed

Your waxing preferences are as unique as you are. There’s no right, wrong, or “normal” — the areas you want waxed are completely up to you. That’s why with leg waxing, you can choose between a “full” or “half” service. A full means that hair is waxed from the tip of your toes to the top of your thighs. A half means hair is waxed from the top of the knee to the tip of your toes or from below the knee up to your hips. If you want to try out leg waxing, a half wax can be the perfect way to get started!

How long does leg hair have to be to wax?

If you’re used to shaving every day, learning how to prepare for leg waxing can be a new and different process. The pre-appointment grow-out period is part of this. For leg waxing to be most effective, body hair needs to be between a quarter inch and a half inch. Typically, this means waiting two weeks to four weeks after shaving your legs.

While this might seem like a long time, the longer you wait for leg hair to grow out before your leg waxing appointment, the better the process will work. (So, it will be worth it!) That may mean wearing pants instead of shorts or skirts, or other clothing choices that help you feel most comfortable during the grow-out period.

Help — What if my leg hair isn’t long enough for waxing?

No worries, it happens! If your leg waxing appointment is coming up and your leg hair isn’t at least a quarter inch or you shaved recently, give your local studio a call to talk about rescheduling. Just be sure to call the studio at least 24 hours in advance! As you plan your timing, keep in mind that it’s recommended to get a leg wax every 4-6 weeks or so, as this gives your hair enough time to grow to the proper length.

Is getting your legs waxed painful?

If it’s your first time getting your legs waxed, this question is likely top of mind. We feel you — and we get it. Because body and skin sensitivity will vary from person to person, you won’t necessarily know how waxing feels to you until your first visit. With that in mind, no one wants an uncomfortable experience. That’s why our process and wax are designed with ease and efficiency to make your wax as comfortable as it can be.

Pro tip: Taking an over-the-counter pain reliever like acetaminophen a half hour or so before your service can help take the edge off. And as you get your legs waxed more regularly, the less sensitivity you’ll feel. If you ask us, it’s a classic example of trusting the process — and oh so worth it!

What should I do leading up to my waxing appointment — and the day of?

When it comes to waxing, your skin is your canvas. For best results, we recommend taking a few steps to create the ideal conditions for smooth, even results.

A few days before your appointment, we recommend exfoliating your legs with a body scrub, like our Scented Sugar Scrubs, and moisturizing with non-greasy products for best results. You’ll also want to avoid sun exposure starting two days before getting your leg waxed, and for two days after as well. A sunburn can add to skin sensitivity, making your skin canvas less than ideal for waxing.

The day of your appointment, plan to arrive at the studio with clean skin. Simply wash and cleanse your body as you normally would. It’s also important to skip coffee and caffeine before your appointment since this can increase sensitivity.

Lock in glowing results: 3 post-appointment leg waxing tips

Amp up the self-care: There’s no wrong time to practice self-care, but it’s especially important after a leg waxing appointment. Here’s what to do: Keep clothing loose (tight pants can create friction against your legs), stick with mildly warm water temperatures when bathing (no hot water for up to two days), and opt for a gentle body cleanser and moisturizer. Take this as your sign to take it easy.
Exfoliate your skin up to three times a week: To keep ingrown hairs at bay post-appointment, make exfoliation a regular part of your maintenance routine. Just be sure to wait 48 hours or so, since skin can be sensitive after leg waxing, especially if it’s your first time. Red bumps can show up after your appointment, but these typically fade within a few hours.
Keep waxing appointments consistent: You took the first step to feel your best in your skin, now keep it up! We recommend making appointments every four weeks or so, but talk to your Cerologist to set up a schedule that makes sense for you. Plus, take advantage of a membership to save on your service!

How did that happen, and more importantly, what can you do about it?

First, deep breath. If you break out or experience bumps after waxing, you’re not alone. What you’re seeing is likely a bit of folliculitis (the medical term for inflammation of the hair follicles). It can show up as small pimples, red bumps, or a rash on your body, and while it’s a common side effect of waxing, it’s also totally manageable. Spoiler: With the right prep, techniques, and aftercare, folliculitis after waxing is preventable. (More on that later!)

First things first: why do pimples after waxing happen? Waxing removes hair straight from the root, which temporarily leaves hair follicles more open and vulnerable. Before your waxing appointment

Great skin starts outside the treatment room. Use these tips to prep your skin and prevent irritation, ingrown hairs, and bumps — and get the best results from your wax:

Gently exfoliate 24 to 48 hours before your wax to remove dead skin cells and clear out pores.
Stay hydrated — dry skin is more prone to sensitivity and breakouts.
Avoid heavy lotions or oils on the day of your appointment, as they can interfere with the wax and make hair removal less effective.
Skip tanning, chemical peels, or retinoids (especially on your face) for at least 48 hours before waxing.
Wear loose-fitting clothes to your appointment to prevent friction, especially for body waxing.

During your waxing appointment

Exfoliate regularly to prevent ingrown hairs (just make sure to give your skin a break from exfoliation for 48 hours post-wax).
Moisturize daily with a non-comedogenic lotion to keep your skin supple and smooth.

Use a mild, fragrance-free antibacterial cleanser to reduce bacteria.
Spot treat problem areas with witch hazel (for oily or combination skin), aloe vera (for sensitive skin), or salicylic acid (for acne-prone skin).
Avoid the temptation to pick or squeeze bumps and ingrown hairs, which can lead to scarring or infection.
Consider an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream for inflamed areas (only for short-term use).
Stay patient! With proper aftercare, bumps after waxing should go away after 24 to 48 hours.
