Comparing Types of Wax for Hair Removal: How Our Wax Stacks Up

By Waxing The City

If you’re looking for smooth, lasting results from your wax (who isn’t?), you already know not just any wax will do. But sorting through all the types of wax for hair removal (and ingredient lists with words that look like an alien language) might feel like more work than it’s worth. Deep breaths — we’re here to help! Let’s talk about:

  • The most common types of wax
  • Why we made a wax that’s different (and what makes it great)
  • The key ingredients in our waxes (and what they do for your skin)
  • How our expert wax techs level up your experience

Types of wax for hair removal

There are a lot of waxes on the market, so knowing what’s what — and deciding which is best suited for your skin — can feel like choosing the right shade of foundation with a blindfold on (impossible). To clear things up, here’s a breakdown of some of the most popular types of wax, including variations of hard wax (used for small, sensitive areas) and soft wax (used for larger areas). Spoiler alert: Our waxes are different!

Chocolate wax

Chocolate wax is a creamy wax formula often infused with vitamins and oils. It gets its signature chocolate scent from cocoa, which offers antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Sugar wax

Sugar wax is a paste made from sugar, lemon juice, and water. While often described as gentler than waxing, it may require multiple passes to fully remove all hairs — which can mean redness and irritation may last longer than other types of wax. (Not as sweet as it sounds!)

Coral wax

Coral wax is a type of hard wax known for its orangey-pink color. It has a low melting point (and therefore, a lower temperature when melted), so it’s a gentle option often used for sensitive skin and thick or stubborn hair, like in the pubic area.

Creme wax

Creme wax is formulated for sensitive skin and helps prevent redness, irritation, and discomfort after waxing. It has a creamy texture and is applied in thin layers for efficient removal.

How our wax came to life

Here’s the thing: Not all waxes are created equal. The smell, texture, and color of a wax ultimately don’t determine your results — the ingredients do, and we weren’t about to settle for “good enough.” That’s why we created our own.

We partnered with expert chemists to develop formulas that deliver on both sides of the experience, creating a wax that not only protected the skin, but also had the qualities Cerologists (aka our specialized wax technicians) need to do their job correctly and efficiently. Enter: Cera Neranja and Cerasuave Yellow.

Our signature hard and soft waxes

Just like hair types, waxing isn’t one-size-fits-all. That’s why we use two expertly formulated waxes — each designed for specific areas and glowing results.

Signature hard wax: Cera Neranja

Our signature hard wax, Cera Neranja, is designed for areas of the body where hair grows coarser. Think: face, bikini area, and underarms. Hard wax uses a shrink wrap and cooling method that creates a smooth and seamless removal procedure (in other words: a more comfortable wax for you!). Our Cerologists apply hard wax in small, strategic sections to match natural hair growth patterns — because precision makes all the difference.

Signature soft wax: Cerasuave Yellow

Waxing the City’s signature Cerasuave Yellow soft wax.

Our Cerasuave Yellow soft wax is ideal for larger areas like the legs, arms, back, and chest, where skin is thicker and hair is finer. Soft wax spreads easily and strongly adheres to even the finest hairs for ultra-smooth results in fewer passes.

What’s in our wax? Ingredients you need to know

It’s not just what we leave out — it’s what we put in that matters. Our formulas are thoughtfully crafted with ingredients that support your skin before, during, and after your service.

Soft wax ingredients:

  • Glyceryl rosinate: The base of the wax that helps grip hair (not skin), leading to cleaner removal and smoother results.
  • Paraffinum liquidum (mineral oil): Helps the wax glide smoothly onto skin, reducing pull and enhancing comfort.
  • Cera alba (beeswax): Helps hydrate and soothe skin while supporting a soft, smooth finish.
  • Mica: Contributes to a smooth, even application for more consistent results.
  • Zea mays (corn) oil: Adds moisture and enhances glide for a more comfortable experience.
  • Beta-carotene and tocopherol: Antioxidants that help nourish and support healthy-looking skin.
  • CI 77891 (titanium dioxide): Helps reduce irritation and protect sensitive skin.

Hard wax ingredients:

  • Glyceryl rosinate and hydrogenated styrene/butadiene copolymer: Helps the wax grab onto hair (not skin) and flex just enough to remove it cleanly in one satisfying pull.
  • Paraffin and cera microcristallina: Gives the wax its signature structure — firm enough to work effectively, flexible enough to move with your skin.
  • Paraffinum liquidum: Helps the wax apply like a dream, reducing drag so your service feels as good as the results look.
  • BHT and TRIS-BHT mesitylene: Keeps the formula stable and performing at its best (because consistency is kind of our thing).
  • Mica + CI 77891 + CI 15850 + CI 19140: Helps the wax go on evenly and stay visible so your Cerologist can be precise.
  • Hydrated silica: Keeps the consistency just right for a seamless, comfortable application.

Quality ingredients matter

Why do we care what goes into our waxes? Because it makes a serious difference in your comfort — and your results.

Low-quality waxes don’t adhere as well to hairs and may break mid-pull, which can cause pain, hair breakage, and patchiness. It can also mean using additional strips of wax, increasing your risk of irritation and redness. (No, thanks!) Our proprietary waxes, on the other hand, are carefully formulated to adhere consistently and come off the skin evenly. Our Cerologists love them, and you will, too.

Custom waxes, expert Cerologists, exceptional results

Great wax is just the beginning. Our Cerologists are extensively trained in technique, mapping, and customization, so your service is tailored to your unique hair growth and skin needs.

Fun fact: Early on, we used a reputable mainstream wax available at other studios. Although the wax was the same, clients reported that the experience and results were not. The gist: Results don’t just come down to the type of wax; it’s also about the technique and the experience of the person handling the wax.

Our Cerologists use a specialized mapping system to accommodate various hair growth patterns and adjust the size of the wax pieces to reduce the risk of breakage and discomfort. Don’t just take our word for it — you’ll see and feel the difference in how smooth, radiant, and confident you feel after a wax.

With our wax, the difference is in the details

When it comes to types of wax for hair removal, flashy colors and trendy ingredients might look fun, but they don’t guarantee results. What does? Thoughtful formulation plus expert application. That’s where we shine. Because when your wax is done right, you don’t just leave smooth — you leave glowing.
