How to prepare for your back waxing service.

skin exfoliation

We recommend that you exfoliate the area a day or two prior to your appointment. Thoroughly clean the area, keeping the skin moist but not greasy from heavy lotions or oils.

LET IT GROW

Hair should be 1/4” to 1/2” long for effective waxing. For most people, this means waiting 2-4 weeks (minimum of 2) from the last time you shaved, waxed, or removed hair in another way.

SUN EXPOSURE

We recommend that you avoid extreme sun exposure for 48 hours before and after your wax. If you are getting a spray tan, we would recommend getting your tan 1-2 days after your wax. This will ensure your skin is hair-free and has had time to recover.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Your skin may be sensitive following your nose waxing service — and that’s totally normal! This could include:

  • Redness
  • Itching
  • Ingrown hairs

Any irritation should subside within a few hours.

PREVENT INGROWNS

Exfoliating 2-3 times per week can help prevent ingrown hairs from sprouting up after back waxing services. We offer a variety of products including scrubs, brushes, poufs, and oils that can help minimize ingrown hairs.

avoid post wax

After your back waxing service, make sure to avoid the following for 24–48 hours after your service:

  • Sun exposure
  • Tanning beds
  • Hot baths and hot tubs
  • Heavy lotions
  • Exfoliation

Back waxing FAQ

The process of a back waxing service is pretty straightforward:

  1. Once you’ve arrived at the wax studio, your Cerologist will show you to the room, where you’ll discuss what you want from your waxing service (for instance, if you want a full or half back wax) and answer any questions you may have.
  2. They will then step out and have you remove your shirt.
  3. Your Cerologist will knock on the door after several minutes and ask if you’re ready. They’ll tuck a drape towel into your pants to protect your clothing. They will then direct you through the entire waxing process so that they can remove any and all unwanted hair.
  4. The entire waxing process will take about 30 to 45 minutes, start to finish.

We’d recommend every 4 to 6 weeks. The hair growth on the back may be slower, but it can vary from person to person. Of course, it can also vary depending how quickly your hair grows. For more information on how often to get a back waxing or other body waxing service, click here.

The beauty of waxing back hair is knowing you’ll be hair-free for a minimum of 4 weeks following your wax appointment. That said, waxing is a process, and the more consistently you do it the better the results.

Expect regrowth quicker after the first wax, but with consistent waxing month after month, you will start to see the hair stay away for longer periods of time. Waxing lasts much longer than shaving, as shaving only cuts hair at the surface, while waxing removes the hair from the root.

We use a traditional soft wax for larger body waxing services such as legs, arms, chest, and back. The wax is removed by using a cloth strip.

We suggest hair be 1/4″ to 1/2” long for effective waxing. Hair that’s longer than 1/2” (about the length of a grain of rice) can make waxing back hair more complicated, as it’s prone to breakage when waxed off for first-timers. This means the follicle won’t be removed and your results won’t last as long. Long hair can also cover up other hairs during a wax, which requires repeated waxes of the same area.

Waxing removes hair from the root, resulting in smoother skin for a longer period of time as compared to shaving. While shaving cuts hair at the skin’s surface, waxing can keep your back smooth for up to 6 weeks.

Plus, waxing exfoliates the skin, removing dead skin cells along with hair, which leaves the skin smoother and prevents ingrown hairs. Shaving, on the other hand, can lead to razor burn, cuts, and sometimes ingrown hairs if not done correctly.

Nope! This is a common misconception. Waxing does not affect the thickness or rate of hair growth. The new hairs that grow back may appear thicker due to the blunt tips from waxing, but this is temporary and will not alter your natural hair growth. In fact, waxing more frequently will help with sensitivity as hair grows back finer and sparser.

Of course! Waxing is for everyone.

This location’s prices are listed above, but prices and services vary by location. You can find Waxing the City locations here.

Similar to other body waxing services, there may be slight discomfort or a quick moment of pain during the back hair removal process.

However, at Waxing the City, both our proprietary wax and our hair removal technique work together to offer you the most comfortable service possible. With our custom waxing technique, our expertly trained Cerologists wax in smaller sections for a more comfortable wax. If you’re still worried about managing sensitivity, we recommend taking an ibuprofen or aspirin roughly 30 minutes before your appointment to help maximize your comfort.

Pro tip: Waxing back hair more frequently will help with sensitivity as hair grows back finer and sparser!

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Make sure to avoid heavy moisturizers, serums, or oils.
  • Don’t shave before a wax, as it can irritate the skin. Plus, it will leave the hair too short to wax properly.
  • In order to ensure the most comfortable wax experience, we recommend that you avoid sun exposure for 48 hours before and after your waxing appointment.
  • Avoid drinking a big cup of coffee before your next service as caffeine can increase your sensitivity levels.

In order to ensure the most comfortable wax experience, we recommend that you avoid sun exposure for 48 hours before and after your wax.

This goes for sunless tanning, too. If you get a spray tan before your wax appointment, it will remove some of the color from your skin, leaving it splotchy and possibly irritated.

Before: You don’t necessarily need to take a shower before a back waxing service, but doing so does allow the Cerologist to work on clean skin.

After: We don’t suggest taking a shower immediately after a back waxing service. Try to wait at least 2 hours after back hair removal. If you do need to shower, use lukewarm water on the waxed area. Warm or hot water may irritate the skin.

Wear whatever will make you comfortable during your back waxing service. The Cerologist will give you a drape towel to tuck into your pants in order to protect your clothing.

Whether you want a full back wax or a half back wax is entirely up to you! A half back wax may be performed on the lower half (includes the upper buttocks) or upper half (includes the shoulders) and is decided by the client at the time of the service.

Our licensed cosmetologists and estheticians are not only waxing and beauty specialists — they are the ultimate professionals at their craft. To reflect their expertise, we created our own name: Cerologist. Looking for the definition of a Cerologist? Cerologist combines cera (Latin for wax) with ologist (to indicate their waxing authority and education).

Certain medications, isotretinoin or tretinoin (aka retinoic acid) can thin your skin, causing potential for tearing during back waxing services. Let your Cerologist know if you’re taking or applying any prescriptions. Your Cerologist will ask you to complete an intake form when you arrive for your appointment.

  • Bumps: Irritated skin may cause some bumps to appear, but they’ll likely go away on their own within hours or days. As part of your back wax aftercare, try our Post Wax Serum to help soothe the skin if needed. Just ask your Cerologist to point you in the right direction.
  • Redness: Skin redness can disappear anywhere between a few minutes to a few days.
  • Itching: Try not to scratch. Itching usually occurs in between appointments when hair starts to grow back, but exfoliation can help.
  • Stubble or Ingrown hairs: To help prevent ingrown hairs (or further skin irritation), we recommend using our Post Wax Serum or ingrown hair exfoliating pads.
