9 Things Your Cerologist Wants You to Know

No matter if you’re a waxing pro or new to the world of wax, there are a few things your Cerologist wants you to know to ensure each appointment is an experience you look forward to. We asked and they answered: here are the top 9 things your Cerologist hopes you know:

1. It’s a Judgement-Free Zone

Worried about what your Cerologist will think about your appearance? Don’t. This might be the most common worry many people have going into any waxing salon. What if I’m too hairy? What if I look different from other people? Stop yourself right there! Our Cerologists have performed services on thousands of women and men, so they’ve seen it all. For them, your appointment is another opportunity to help you look and feel confident, so if you’re worried that you’re too hairy or look too different, know that there is no such thing at Waxing the City.

2. Preparation Is Key

If you want your results to be smooth and long-lasting, what you do before your appointment is important. There are several things you should avoid before your wax. This includes sunbathing, working out, drinking alcohol and trimming. The harsh UVA/UVB rays can cause potential inflammation while working out can cause the wax to not adhere to your skin. Trimming before waxing is a big no-no, no matter how tempting, and remember, your hair should be at least a quarter inch in length (think the length of a grain of rice) when you’re getting a wax.

3. Ask The Questions!

Whether you’re a first timer or a Club Orange member, you will always have questions about the procedure, products, aftercare or your Cerologist’s recommendations. Don’t hesitate to ask any questions or express any concerns you might have like “what should I expect in my first Brazilian wax?“. After all, this appointment is for you. Your Cerologist wants you to feel comfortable; if you want your end result to look a certain way, don’t be afraid to speak up. Once you have all your burning questions answered, you’ll be able to relax throughout your appointment and enjoy being smooth as ever!

4. Leave It to The Pros

Resist the temptation to DIY your wax. Unless you’re an at-home waxing expert (and no, watching YouTube videos on how to wax does not count), leave hair removal to a trained professional (see: Cerologist). At-home waxing leaves a lot of room for error and chances are things could go very wrong, very fast. DIY waxing casualties include, but are not limited to: burns, bruised skin, rogue hairs left behind and more. Doesn’t sound like the smooth, flawless look you were going for. Trust us when we say: it’s not worth it!

5. Put Down That Razor

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, shaving before your wax is a big no. If you’re really looking to be hair free, you should be growing your hair out for at least three to four weeks before coming in for your wax. That means no shaving in between! Obviously, everyone’s hair grows at a different pace, but you should be looking for hair that’s at least a quarter inch in length. Our custom wax wraps around the entire hair and in order for the wax to lift the hair successfully, it needs something to hold onto! Not only that, but you won’t get as smooth of a finish and this causes your hair to grow back even faster.

6. Exfoliate & Moisturize

Refer back to number 3 where we said your results are dependent on preparation. Part of that preparation includes exfoliating and moisturizing prior to your appointment. This ensures that your skin and your hair are as soft as possible, which makes the waxing process much easier and more thorough. Start gently exfoliating about a week or so before your appointment. This helps all those hairs break through and makes it much easier for your Cerologist to pull them from the root. It can be tempting to go straight to the beach in that bikini after your fresh wax, but schedule your beach days around your wax appointment. Plus, swimming in water can expose your delicate skin to bacteria, so you may want to stay landside. It’s also important to avoid excessive sweating. This means staying away from hot yoga, saunas or intense workouts. Your Cerologist wants you to love your wax, and your results are dependent on following after-care instructions.

8. You Have Options

Your wax appointment is for you and about you! Your Cerologist wants you to know that no matter what service they’re providing, you have options to personalize your experience and look. Remember when we said to dialogue with your Cerologist? We weren’t joking. Our Cerologists are a lot of things, but one they’re not: mind readers! Only you know what type of bikini shape you want or how much hair you want removed, so communicate that with your Cerologist. 9. Timing Is Everything

There are a couple things you should consider when scheduling your appointment. Waxing too soon after your previous wax is something you want to avoid in order to make sure you have adequate regrowth of us to remove. Again, it depends on your hair-growth speed, but try to aim for an appointment at least 3-6 weeks after your last appointment. And this goes without saying, but time your wax appointments around your social events. Every brow waxing service starts with a one-on-one brow mapping consultation with your Cerologist. “We know how nerve-racking a brow wax can be, so we guide you through the process as much as possible,” says Arlotta.

During your consultation, your wax technician will give you a mirror and show you the three important points of your brow:

The lowest point (the beginning of the brow)
The highest point (the arch)
The end of the brow (the tail)

3 more ways to achieve your best brow shape

1. Use makeup to enhance your natural look

Meet your new brow best friends: brow pencils and brow powder. Arlotta says, “Both products can give a soft or bold look depending on how you layer them. Remember to always blend the product as you go!”

Use the pencil to create fine, natural lines that mimic hair strokes to fill in areas where hair might be missing. Then, go in with powder to add depth and a pop of color to your eyebrows.

2. Turn up the glam with brow tinting

First, deep breath. If you break out or experience bumps after waxing, you’re not alone. What you’re seeing is likely a bit of folliculitis (the medical term for inflammation of the hair follicles). It can show up as small pimples, red bumps, or a rash on your body, and while it’s a common side effect of waxing, it’s also totally manageable. Spoiler: With the right prep, techniques, and aftercare, folliculitis after waxing is preventable. (More on that later!)

Avoid heavy lotions or oils on the day of your appointment, as they can interfere with the wax and make hair removal less effective.

Wear loose-fitting clothes to your appointment to prevent friction, especially for body waxing.

Maybe leg day is on the schedule or you’ve got a big practice that you can’t miss. That leaves one big question: Can you work out after waxing?

Exercise and waxing can be a dynamic, confidence-boosting duo for a healthy body and healthy skin. We’re here to break down how to balance workouts with waxing, so your smooth skin and sweat sesh can coexist without compromise. Let’s keep that glow going, gym bag and all.

First things first: Is working out after waxing okay?

It’s one of the questions we get most often: Can you work out after an eyebrow wax? What about a bikini or leg wax? The answer is yes to all the above, but timing matters. We recommend avoiding intense physical activity for at least 24 hours after a wax. Working out too soon after your wax can cause chafing, irritation, and even infection. (No one wants a post-Brazilian wax bummer!)

If you’re eager to move, try swapping high-impact workouts for low-intensity options that go easier on your skin. Low-impact options keep sweat to a minimum (like walking or certain types of yoga — more on that below!). This is important because friction and sweating after waxing increases your risk of unwanted side effects like:

If you do notice any irritation, don’t panic! Just show your skin a little love with these quick recovery tips:

Apply a cold compress for five to 10 minutes to calm any swelling and inflammation
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Drinking water helps keep your skin supple and moisturized.
Steer clear of heat like steamy showers and saunas for at least 24 hours after your wax.

How long after waxing can you swim?

Next question: How long should you wait to take a dip after waxing? Great question! And one we hear all the time from beach-bound babes and poolside loungers alike. This gives your skin time to recover and reduces the risk of irritation or infection from chlorine, saltwater, or other splashy surprises.

Practicing gentle exercise after waxing is just one way to ensure you get the smoothest, longest-lasting results. Let’s talk about other ways to make your wax count, from things to avoid after waxing to tips for healthy skin:

Avoid sun exposure. Your skin is more sensitive post-wax, especially when it comes to sun damage. Lather up with SPF and accessorize with a hat to protect your skin for up to 48 hours post-wax.
Skip the tanning bed. Similar to sun exposure, tanning beds can damage your skin after waxing. Wait one or two days to hit the tanning bed (or opt for sunless tanning instead — here’s everything you need to know!).
Turn down the temp in the shower. Hot showers feel great, but not for freshly waxed skin. Keep things lukewarm to prevent dehydration and irritation.
Give your skin a break from exfoliation. Much like your body needs a rest day after working out, your skin needs a little downtime to heal, too. We recommend waiting two to three days before exfoliating after waxing to avoid unwanted irritation or ingrowns.
Moisturize! If moisturizer isn’t already part of your skincare routine, it definitely should be! It’ll keep your skin from drying out and help it bounce back faster. Our personal fav is bakuchiol body cream — antioxidant-rich, hydrating, and oh-so-glowy.
