Your New Fall Body Skincare Routine

“Most of the time when we think about skin care our minds go straight to the face

…but we want you to think a bit differently.”

As the end of summer approaches, pumpkin spice lattes are back in season, the weather is changing, and temperatures are dropping—you may experience some not-so-fun changes in your skin. You may start to experience some dryness, be prone to redness, and start to flake as the temps cool. If you start to feel nostalgia for that summer glow you once had, don’t worry! We’re here to help you find a routine to take care of your skin during this transition so you can accomplish glowing skin year-round.

Most of the time when we think about skin care our minds go straight to the face. Facial wash, serums, acne prevention, and so many other products are generally associated with the term ‘skincare’. But we want you to think a bit differently. Your skin in general is your largest organ, it’s important to take care of it! That’s why we’ve created the perfect body skincare routine for you to utilize this upcoming fall season to keep your skin healthy, hydrated, and luminous as ever.

Step One: Dry Brush

The first step of any amazing body skincare routine is to dry brush. If you haven’t tried it before, now’s your chance! Dry brushing is excellent for removing all those dull layers of skin; especially in between waxing appointments and preventing ingrown hairs! It can also help to stimulate and increase blood circulation, eliminate toxins from the body, improve function of internal organs, reduce the appearance of cellulite, and leaves your skin looking and feeling healthier. Start at your feet and move up your body, moving the brush in wide, circular, clockwise motions. Be sure to use lighter pressure in areas where the skin is thinner like your bikini line and harder pressure on thicker skin like your booty or thighs. Step Two: Cleanse

After a long day out, sweat, dirt, and oil accumulates onto your skin and without a good cleanser, your skin is prone to breakouts, problematic skin conditions, and eczema. You can easily avoid this by making sure to incorporate a quality cleanser into your body skincare routine to maintain good hygiene and keep your skin its healthiest self.

Try using a shower gel or body wash. Try using a shower gel or body wash. The Fur All Body Wash is the perfect place to start. This product begins as an oil and then transforms into a moisturizing lather that’s perfectly cleansing and hydrating. It’s 100% all-natural, and is paraben, sulfate, silicone, artificial colors or fragrances, and gluten free! This product provides a deep cleanse while protecting your skin’s natural oils.

Step Three: Exfoliate

Exfoliating is not only important to your waxing game but also to keeping your skin soft and supple through the chillier months. Aim to exfoliate two to three times a week. Over-exfoliating your skin can lead to irritation, redness, and can actually damage your outermost skin barrier. Try using a sugar scrub to exfoliate. Our favorites are Lalicious Sugar Scrubs. Step Four: Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

This is the most important step in your fall body skincare routine. After you shower, there are a couple ways you can rehydrate the skin. Incorporating body oils in your routine can help your skin heal faster, provide anti-aging properties, unclog pores, and leave your skin looking gorgeous and silky smooth. The key is to use your body oil before you use a heavy moisturizer so that your skin can lock in all the moisture possible. Our favorite is our Waxing the City Dry Body Oil, we swear it’s not bias—it’s just THAT good. It’s made with sesame and sunflower oil, olive-leaf extract and jojoba oil, and Dermaxyl, which is proven to reduce wrinkles and fine lines while enhancing radiance.

The next hydration step is using a body butter, melt, or lotion. This way your skin can really soak in all that skin softening and hydrating goodness. Keeping your skin moisturized can help with waxing, too! It keeps the hair nourished and soft, which makes hair more supple, and easier to remove from the skin. Step Five: Self-Tan

The self-tanner we always turn to is the St. Tropez Classic Bronzing Mousse. It doesn’t have that gross self-tanner smell, it’s streak free, super easy to apply, and quick drying so there’s no transfer. Your body goes through major changes when you’re pregnant—that comes as no surprise to anyone who has either had a baby or is carrying one now! While you already know that some of your habits (looking at you, Thursday afternoon happy hour) will need to change now that there’s a baby on board, plan on your skincare routine changing, too. We know—just when you had it down to a science.

The pregnancy glow comes naturally to some, but unfortunately, not all of us are so lucky. Your skin is the largest organ in your body and sometimes, it can take the brunt force of your new raging pregnancy hormones. But the good news is that skincare has come a long way in developing products that mimic that sought-after pregnancy glow and are safe for baby at the same time. We’re here to help you decipher between the skincare products and ingredients that you can trust for yourself and for your baby.

What happens to your skin when you’re pregnant and why?

Pregnancy-related skin changes happen to almost everyone. Seriously! Maybe you have nine months of gorgeous glowing, clear skin or maybe you’re suffering from hormone-induced breakouts. Either way, blame the hormones! Hormonal fluctuations in your body, like your estrogen and progesterone levels, can influence all the changes that you might see in your skin. Many of the changes include:

Hypersensitivity
Clearer complexion
Discoloration
Breakouts
Dark skin patches
Stretch marks
Moles/skin tags

The most common skin conditions women experience during pregnancy are acne, dry skin, and skin discoloration like melasma or chloasma. It’s also important to include that people with pre-existing conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea may also see fluctuations in their usual symptoms. Every woman is different which means the products and ingredients they include in their skincare line-up should be different, too.

Why is it important to review skincare ingredients when pregnant?

Certain off-limits food and beverages aren’t the only thing you should be thinking about when you’re pregnant. You should be taking a hard look at what goes into your current skincare lineup. We’re not saying you should toss your entire beauty arsenal and start over, we’re saying take a closer look at the ingredient list to see what might not be so good for you or your baby. There are some skincare products and ingredients that are known to be unsafe during pregnancy. Ingredients with known or suspected risks should be avoided during pregnancy because they are absorbed through the skin, they are absorbed into the bloodstream which can affect your developing baby. Remember, what you put on your body is just as important as what you put in it!

Product Dos and Don’ts:

There are certain products that you should make an effort towards incorporating into your new pregnancy skincare routine. Depending on which skin issues you’re facing, some may be more important to incorporate than others.

Products to include in your routine:

Sunscreen

Gentle face cleanser / acne-fighting cleanser
Acne treatment (if necessary)
Exfoliant

Products and treatments to avoid:

Laser treatment

Chemical peels
Retinol

Which ingredients should you stay away from?

When deciding which products to include into your routine, there are certain ingredients you should avoid. These ingredients have associated risks when used while pregnant. However, some of them are okay in smaller doses—always consult with your doctor and be transparent about the products you use. The main ingredients to steer clear of include:

Retinoids: Products that contain high dosage of retinoids or retinol should be avoided during pregnancy. This could also include products that have a high dosage of Vitamin A as well. There have been birth defects linked to higher doses of retinoids and prescription retinoids, like Accutane. High-dosage retinoids can pose a 20-35 percent risk of severe congenital defects.
Salicylic Acid: Products that contain salicylic acid are normally used to treat acne but a high dosage, like in peels and some oral medications, are unsafe during pregnancy. Anything with 2 percent or less of salicylic acid is generally okay, but anything over that dosage should be avoided.
Hydroquinone: Often used as a skin lightening agent or to reduce skin pigmentation, hydroquinone is often used to treat melasma and chloasma. It is absorbed through the skin at very high rates. Although there is no proven link between congenital defects or side effects, it is still significantly absorbed by the body, especially when compared to other ingredients. It’s best to limit your exposure.
