9 Things Your Cerologist Wants You to Know

No matter if you’re a waxing pro or new to the world of wax, there are a few things your Cerologist wants you to know to ensure each appointment is an experience you look forward to. We asked and they answered: here are the top 9 things your Cerologist hopes you know:

1. It’s a Judgement-Free Zone

Worried about what your Cerologist will think about your appearance? Don’t. This might be the most common worry many people have going into any waxing salon. What if I’m too hairy? What if I look different from other people? Stop yourself right there! Our Cerologists have performed services on thousands of women and men, so they’ve seen it all. For them, your appointment is another opportunity to help you look and feel confident, so if you’re worried that you’re too hairy or look too different, know that there is no such thing at Waxing the City.

2. Preparation Is Key

If you want your results to be smooth and long-lasting, what you do before your appointment is important. There are several things you should avoid before your wax. This includes sunbathing, working out, drinking alcohol and trimming. The harsh UVA/UVB rays can cause potential inflammation while working out can cause the wax to not adhere to your skin. Trimming before waxing is a big no-no, no matter how tempting, and remember, your hair should be at least a quarter inch in length (think the length of a grain of rice) when you’re getting a wax.

3. Ask The Questions!

Whether you’re a first timer or a Club Orange member, you will always have questions about the procedure, products, aftercare or your Cerologist’s recommendations. Don’t hesitate to ask any questions or express any concerns you might have like “what should I expect in my first Brazilian wax?“. After all, this appointment is for you. Your Cerologist wants you to feel comfortable; if you want your end result to look a certain way, don’t be afraid to speak up. Once you have all your burning questions answered, you’ll be able to relax throughout your appointment and enjoy being smooth as ever!

4. Leave It to The Pros

Resist the temptation to DIY your wax. Unless you’re an at-home waxing expert (and no, watching YouTube videos on how to wax does not count), leave hair removal to a trained professional (see: Cerologist). At-home waxing leaves a lot of room for error and chances are things could go very wrong, very fast. DIY waxing casualties include, but are not limited to: burns, bruised skin, rogue hairs left behind and more. Doesn’t sound like the smooth, flawless look you were going for. Trust us when we say: it’s not worth it!

5. Put Down That Razor

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, shaving before your wax is a big no. If you’re really looking to be hair free, you should be growing your hair out for at least three to four weeks before coming in for your wax. That means no shaving in between! Obviously, everyone’s hair grows at a different pace, but you should be looking for hair that’s at least a quarter inch in length. Our custom wax wraps around the entire hair and in order for the wax to lift the hair successfully, it needs something to hold onto! Not only that, but you won’t get as smooth of a finish and this causes your hair to grow back even faster.

6. Exfoliate & Moisturize

Refer back to number 3 where we said your results are dependent on preparation. Part of that preparation includes exfoliating and moisturizing prior to your appointment. This ensures that your skin and your hair are as soft as possible, which makes the waxing process much easier and more thorough. Start gently exfoliating about a week or so before your appointment. This helps all those hairs break through and makes it much easier for your Cerologist to pull them from the root. It can be tempting to go straight to the beach in that bikini after your fresh wax, but schedule your beach days around your wax appointment. Plus, swimming in water can expose your delicate skin to bacteria, so you may want to stay landside. It’s also important to avoid excessive sweating. This means staying away from hot yoga, saunas or intense workouts. Your Cerologist wants you to love your wax, and your results are dependent on following after-care instructions.

8. You Have Options

Your wax appointment is for you and about you! Your Cerologist wants you to know that no matter what service they’re providing, you have options to personalize your experience and look. 9. Timing Is Everything

There are a couple things you should consider when scheduling your appointment. Waxing too soon after your previous wax is something you want to avoid in order to make sure you have adequate regrowth of us to remove. Again, it depends on your hair-growth speed, but try to aim for an appointment at least 3-6 weeks after your last appointment. And this goes without saying, but time your wax appointments around your social events. Every brow waxing service starts with a one-on-one brow mapping consultation with your Cerologist. “We know how nerve-racking a brow wax can be, so we guide you through the process as much as possible,” says Arlotta.

During your consultation, your wax technician will give you a mirror and show you the three important points of your brow:

The lowest point (the beginning of the brow)
The highest point (the arch)
The end of the brow (the tail)

First, the technician will press your eyelashes to get them ready for a lifting balm, which is known as bonding. When applied, the balm straightens your natural lashes at the root. Hands off! Try not to rub or touch your eyes or face for the first couple days. Oil buildup on your lashes may prevent them from setting correctly.
Don’t sleep on your face for the first two nights. Your lashes may lose their shape, as they are more pliable after a lift. Instead, sleep on your side or back.
A cold compress can help if you experience any redness or irritation.

During the process, your Cerologist will start by cleaning your brows to create a blank canvas for tinting and then set them in place before adding color using an expert technique for even coverage. Once the tint has had time to set, your Cerologist will gently remove it using a cotton swab, and you’ll be left with bold, beautiful brows.

Option 2: Brow prime and tint

A brow prime and tint treatment involves an extra step: lightening the brows first. This is done to create a fresh palette for lighter tints, stubborn gray hair coverage, or bold colors. This option also lasts longer — up to six weeks. So, if you’re looking for a statement brow or simply a brow upgrade that lasts and lasts, this may be the right choice for you.

Maintaining your look: Eyebrow tint aftercare

Once your brows are tinted, your canvas is almost complete. The one last thing to keep that masterpiece looking fresh is eyebrow tint aftercare. After the appointment, it’s important to give your brows some room to breathe. Think of it as letting the ink dry — avoid water and moisture for at least 12 hours. This will help ensure the best results and make your brow tint last its longest.

Here are a few more pro tips to follow:

Avoid washing your face, showering, and using steam baths or saunas for 12-24 hours following your appointment. Instead, try using a makeup wipe to cleanse your skin while carefully avoiding the brow area.
Skip using retinols and oil-based face products around your brows to help maintain results for at least 72 hours. Oil can interact with the color and cause it to fade.
If you normally use an exfoliant in your facial skincare routine, avoid exfoliating the brow area or skip this step altogether — this will help the tint last longer.

Lastly, skin under and around the brow can be faintly stained following a brow tint service. This is completely normal and will fade on its own within a few days. As for the brow itself, with proper aftercare, the color will naturally fade over the three to six weeks following your service.

Elizabeth is an award-winning beauty writer in high demand, so we were especially lucky to get some facetime with the skincare queen herself and dish on all things essential to her beauty routine. WTC: Elizabeth, we are thrilled to chat with you! Let’s start with your north star. What is most important to you in your skincare routine?

EK: It probably comes as a surprise to no one that my skincare routine is sacred. It’s my favorite form of self-care. I am not the girl who voluntarily goes to bed without washing her face (unless I have voluntarily had too much fun that night). But none of this matters if the products I’m using don’t deliver. You can give me all of the pretty packaging, expensive brand names, and big claims but after years of testing skincare, I am ruthless about it needing to work.

WTC: There are so many products to choose from that it’s easy to get overwhelmed. What products are your absolute must-haves and why?

EK: I don’t leave the house without sun protection, at least SPF 30 but ideally SPF 50. It doesn’t matter how long I’m going to be outside or if the sun is shining. I’ve been around the block (see what I did there?) enough times to know that no skincare product can undo what sunscreen can do for your skin.

WTC: SPF, got it. Yes, we’re taking notes! What’s most important to you in a skincare line?

EK: Active ingredients that work and serve a purpose—ideally natural—without a bunch of unnecessary fillers. I like smart products. High integrity products. There’s so much on the market, we don’t need to settle.

I also prefer formulas that feel good to apply. Skincare is an experience. Scent and texture are such a personal thing, but you know when it’s right and it’s okay to be picky. This is your time and your face!

WTC: We agree! It’s completely acceptable to be picky when it comes to our skin. It feels like there’s a new beauty trend to consider all the time. What skincare trends do you love?

EK: I’m a big fan of gua sha facial massage, a traditional Chinese medicine technique that uses a flat stone to improve circulation. I give myself one every morning with my moisturizer or face oil and not only does it provide a moment of Zen but has made a difference in my skin firmness and jawline definition. It’s also depuffing, so the perfect morning ritual pre-Zoom calls!

WTC: It’s working. Your skin is absolutely glowing! Tell us all your secrets!

EK: Sleep and sweating make a noticeable difference with my skin. I miss hot yoga for this reason! There’s something about resting and releasing toxins that my skin loves and can’t be faked with products.

That said, I double mask weekly with a combination of whatever my skin needs at the moment. Usually a clay-based mask for deep pore cleansing followed by a hydrating mask that I leave on overnight. I used to think exfoliation was the answer to all of my skincare problems but have learned from the best estheticians that feeding your skin is where it’s at.

I did enough sun worshiping in my teenage years so skin brightening treatments are also on heavy rotation. Besides the Bakuchiol serum in the evening and a Vitamin C serum in the morning, I get annual light treatments to banish stubborn sunspots.

Hair growth after waxing

Let’s set the record straight: Waxing is one of the best ways to keep unwanted hair in check. Why? Regular waxing weakens hair follicles, so over time, your hair grows back finer, lighter, and way sparser. That old myth about waxing making hair thicker? Consider it officially busted. While some post-wax hair regrowth can appear thicker or darker, it’s just the visual contrast of new hair growing against the skin — not a thicker hair follicle.

Understanding the hair growth cycle

When it comes to the idea of reduced hair growth post-waxing, it’s helpful to take a step back and get familiar with the basics of the hair growth cycle as a whole.

No matter where it’s found on the body, hair growth is a continuous cycle of four stages:

Growth
Regression
Rest
Shedding

According to a 2023 study, every hair follicle cycles independently, with each going through 10 to 30 cycles in a lifetime. While the size, shape, and life cycle of each hair follicle varies by type — from scalp to toes — the four growth stages are the same.

Stage 1. Get growing

Welcome to the anagen phase — also known as the growth stage! This is when hair growth is in full swing, lasting anywhere from a month for brows to up to four months for legs, making it the longest part of the hair cycle. While everyone’s hair growth patterns are unique (thank you, hormones and genetics!), this stage is prime time for hair removal. Waxing during the growth stage means the hair shaft will be removed from the root during the only time in the cycle when hair is connected to the dermal papilla, aka its food source. The catagen phase is when the hair shaft hits pause and stops growing after detaching from its food source, the dermal papilla. This stage lasts just a couple of weeks, but it’s also when you might notice a few post-wax hairs making their comeback. Stage 3. Rest up

The resting stage, called telogen, is the end of hair development. Depending on where the hair is on your body, this stage can take several weeks to several months. While these hairs are resting, new hairs below them are beginning their growth stage, helping to push hair into the next phase (spoiler: shedding!).

Waxing during this stage isn’t ideal since new growth underneath can’t be reached yet. Now, here’s the catch — because everyone’s hair grows at different rates, there’s no way to pinpoint exactly when your hair is in this resting stage. That’s why consistent waxing is key! By staying on schedule, you can catch more hairs in their growth phase over time, leading to finer, sparser regrowth. Stage 4. Don’t dread the shed
