Waxing the City (formerly Wax in the City) was Colorado’s first exclusive waxing salon and was established in November 2003. Provision of waxing services became a passion for Summer Hartshorn as she started her esthetician career in 1996. After graduating from her esthetician program Summer worked for several salons in both Minneapolis and Denver. As she refined her waxing skills, Summer had a dream of someday opening an exclusive waxing studio. Taking this idea to Marilyn Hartshorn, Robin Schoh and Alex Jimenez, an entity solely dedicated to this vision was created.
The first salon was located in an internal 2nd floor space in an office building in the heart of Lower Downtown (Lodo) Denver. Two years later, after showing steady growth in a statistically difficult “start up market” Waxing the City relocated to a street-side retail space adjacent to the renowned 16th Street Mall . Waxing the City experienced rapid growth over the next 18 months and opened salons in the Denver Tech Center (September 2006) and in Boulder (July 2007). Late in 2008, Waxing the City began plans to move outside of the state of Colorado.
Company success is attributed to innovation and synchronicity which was evident in the companies online booking/appointment system, creative advertising campaigns, and a NO TIPPING policy. Waxing the City was the first in the Denver metro area to offer these innovative concepts…competitors have since followed suite and have started to offer similar business strategies. In the fall of 2008, Waxing the City opened “Waxing University” creating an education and training center to ensure state of the art training facilities for all staff. These non-traditional approaches combined with high quality waxing services and outstanding customer service have lead to many awards such as Best of City Search 2005, 2006, & 2007, Best Bikini Wax by 5280 Magazine in 2007 & 2008, and exclusive partnerships with the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Crush.
